How to sign a PDF on your phone

Most documents that need a signature today arrive as a PDF and are read on a phone. The signing itself takes under a minute once you know the four steps: open the file, create the signature, place it, export. Everything below works the same way whether the PDF came from email, a messaging app, or a cloud drive.

Step 1 — Get the file out of the app it arrived in

A PDF opened inside a mail client or chat preview is usually read-only. Tap the share or download icon and save it to Files (iPhone) or Downloads (Android) first. From there any signing tool can open it. If the file arrived as a photo of a document rather than a PDF, convert it before you sign — signatures placed on a photo tend to be rejected because page geometry and text layer are lost.

Step 2 — Draw the signature once, reuse it

Draw with a fingertip on a signature pad rather than trying to write inside the page. A fingertip signature looks better when you sign large and let the tool scale it down: the shakiness shrinks with the strokes. Save the result so the next document takes one tap instead of a new drawing. A good tool keeps saved signatures on the device, not in an account.

Step 3 — Place it, then check the page number

Drag the signature onto the signature line, then resize until it sits on the line rather than over the printed text. Two mistakes cost the most time: signing the wrong page in a long contract, and placing the signature so it covers a date or a printed name. Zoom in once before exporting and read the line under your signature.

Step 4 — Export and send the signed copy

Export a new PDF instead of overwriting the original, so you keep an unsigned copy. Check the exported file size and page count before you send it — some tools rasterize pages and can quietly turn a searchable 12-page contract into a heavy image-only file. Then share it back through the same channel it arrived in.
